D. Fernando II (1816-1885) was a central figure in art collecting in 19th-century Portugal and antique silver was one of his favourite areas, an interest he shared with his son, D. Luís I (1838-1889).
Through acquisitions in Portugal and abroad, as well as through gifts, they assembled important pieces which soon attracted the attention of experts and were made available for exhibitions.
Both collections diminished as they were divided among the royal family and, after the establishment of the Republic in 1910, as they were dispersed throughout other palaces and museums; a small part is on display here.
